Please join MP Joyce Murray at her Friday, February 24, 2017 MP Breakfast Connections with special guest Micheal Vonn: “Public Safety and Civil Liberties: Opposites or Complements?”

The Canadian Government promised to amend the Conservatives’ Bill C-51 and has launched a consultation with Canadians on our security framework. Can our security policies to keep Canadians’ safe at home and abroad be consistent with government’s responsibility to protect the rights and freedoms which shape our open, inclusive, and democratic country?  In today’s digital world, news of cyber-attacks, terrorist attacks, and metadata sweeps leave many of us wondering how to strike the right balance between privacy and security.

Micheal Vonn is a lawyer and has been the Policy Director of the BCCLA since 2004. She has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC) where she has taught civil liberties and information ethics. Ms. Vonn is a frequent speaker on a variety of civil liberties topics including privacy, national security, policing, surveillance and free speech. She is currently a collaborator on Big Data Surveillance, a multi-year research projected lead by Queens University.

Come join the discussion and find out what’s at stake!
