All provincial NDP leadership candidates respond to survey

Every BC NDP leadership candidate has responded to the BCCLA’s request for their positions on key civil liberties issues in the province, and every candidate supports the end of police self investigation. All five leadership candidates answered a series of questions on issues from ensuring the independence of the coroner’s office to police accountability and drug law reform.

“We are greatly appreciative that all five NDP leadership candidates took the time to respond to our survey. Their answers will help ensure that NDP members, and ultimately, provincial voters, will be well informed about where the NDP stands on civil liberties,” said Robert Holmes, President of the BCCLA.

“Civil liberties issues go to the core of maintaining the checks and balances of our democratic society,” said Holmes. “We are certain that all parties recognize the need for police accountability, health based drug law policy, and independent officers of the legislature to provide effective watchdog oversight. The question is the priority that elected officials give these critical issues.”

The BCCLA will be posting a quick reference table, with short responses from each candidate to the questions, as well as their full responses individually. The questions include a number of civil liberties topics, including police accountability, open and transparent government, drug policy, health, administration and access to justice, and sex work.
