BCCLA Film Fest: Victims of the Censor’s Knife

Vancouver, B.C. – The B.C. Civil Liberties Association is hosting its first ever film festival and chosen four films involving censored content to raise awareness around free expression issues. The film festival has four films in two theatres at the Empire Granville Seven Cinemas on November 18, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for BCCLA members, $15 for non-members, or $20 buys tickets and a BCCLA membership for a year.

Mademoiselle and the Doctor – 7:00 pm
90 seconds of this film was cut before it could air on Australian Television. The film will be introduced and followed up in a Q&A by controversial Australian right-to-die advocate Dr. Phillip Nitschke, whose workshop was banned from the Vancouver Public Library last month.

Last Tango in Paris – 7:00 pm
Cut up or banned outright in many countries, Last Tango in Paris faced the heavy hands of Canadian film boards which tried to gut it of its raw sexuality. The film serves as a reminder that an artistic vision should not be compromised to satisfy ambiguous moral standards.

Little Sister’s vs. Big Brother – 9:15 pm
The independent bookstore’s battle with the Canadian Border Services Agency over the CBSA’s continued attempts to censor gay and lesbian erotica continues. This film chronicles part of the ongoing struggle with Canadian authorities who want to regulate what we read. Representatives from Little Sister’s and the Director will be in attendance to answer questions.

Rip! A Remix Manifesto – 9:00 pm
With segments of the soundtrack of this film cut out completely for fear of copyright litigation, the subject matter and the silent concert footage of Rip! tell a forceful story about the future of art and the copyright war.
