BCCLA To Push For Moratorium on Tasers at Braidwood Inquiry

Murray Mollard, Executive Director of the B.C. Civil Liberties will be appearing before the Braidwood Inquiry this morning to make a submission calling for a moratorium on the use of Conducted Energy Weapons, such as Tasers. The BCCLA’s submission will emphasize concerns about civilian oversight of law enforcement and rules for use of Tasers. The BCCLA will call for more research and for clear policies to be established in B.C. and Canada.

Mr. Mollard: “From day one, the BCCLA has been calling for uniform, high standards regarding the training, use and reporting of Taser deployments if the weapon is deemed safe. From day one, provincial and federal governments have chosen to ignore our demands to the detriment of public safety. Governments have abdicated their responsibility for ensuring adequate control and oversight of the police and given the police a blank cheque to decide how and when to deploy Tasers. The BCCLA will urge Mr. Braidwood to address this problem.”

The Braidwood Inquiry hearings will take place at the Federal Court, 701 – 701 W. Georgia St., Vancouver. For more information about the Braidwood Inquiry, including its terms of reference, visit: http://www.braidwoodinquiry.ca/
