Vancouver – On Monday, March 18, 2013, the hearing of the “death with dignity” case will begin at the B.C. Court of Appeal. The court will hear arguments in the case March 18 – 22, 2013.
The hearing was originally scheduled to begin on March 4 but was adjourned because one of the government’s lawyers became ill.
The BCCLA filed the “death with dignity” case in 2011. In June 2012, the B.C. Supreme Court struck down the laws that makes physician-assisted dying illegal in Canada. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Lynn Smith ruled that the laws violated the rights of Gloria Taylor, who suffered from ALS, and the rights of two other plaintiffs in the lawsuit, Lee Carter and Hollis Johnson. The federal government appealed the decision.
