Demand action from Elections Canada for violating Nunavik voting rights

BCCLA is deeply disturbed by reports of people in Nunavik being denied the opportunity to exercise their Charter-protected right to vote in our recent federal election. Without advance notice, multiple polling stations in Nunavik were closed early, or not opened at all on election day. Elections Canada has pointed to weather issues affecting flights for workers as a cause of the situation, but does not seem to have taken any action to address this.

Inuit communities being stripped of their right to vote is a deep affront to both democracy and reconciliation. This cannot be allowed to stand. As is far too often the case, the consequences of these government failures are being borne by Indigenous people.

The Makivvik Corporation has called for Elections Canada to investigate. BCCLA supports this call to action.

BCCLA has submitted a complaint to the Elections Canada requesting information about what legal authority was used to close the polling stations, and what action will be taken to correct this problem.

We are interested in connecting with individuals or communities impacted by this unacceptable infringement on democratic rights.  Please reach out to us at [email protected].

If your rights have been impacted directly, a complaint is more powerful in your own words. You can edit the tool below to share your story.

Please note, when you submit a letter below, the donation request that appears is not from BCCLA but from NewMode (the letter writing tool). None of this money will go directly to BCCLA. To support BCCLA, please click Donate at the top of this page.
