The BC Civil Liberties Association is one of sixty organizations to join the Criminalization and Punishment Education Project in calling on the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre to immediately implement corrective measures to accommodate the needs of Muslim prisoners during Ramadan. Many incarcerated Muslims are observing daily fasts from sunrise to sunsets as a religious and spiritual practice. The Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, however, is refusing to abide by provincial and federal laws to accommodate the needs of Muslim prisoners during Ramadan. No one should have to choose between their faith and their health because of institutional state policies.
