…and Vancouver is invited to the party! For five decades, the BCCLA has been a vanguard in the fight for civil and human rights in Canada, a voice of progress and justice in of the most critical social debates of our time. To celebrate this legacy, we will host two special events:

FRIDAY JUNE 1: Fifty Years of Freedom – Anniversary Speakers Series
SFU Woodwards – Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, 9am-4pm

A day-long symposium featuring some of the highest profile civil liberties defenders in Canada, including:

Michael Geist, the nation’s leading commentator on civil rights in the cyber-age, including copyright, net neutrality and lawful access and Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law at the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Cindy Blackstock, Aboriginal children’s advocate and Executive Director of First Nations Child and Family Caring Society.

Alex Neve, Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada and an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Kim Pate is the Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies and an internationally recognized advocate for criminalized women.

Maureen Webb is a Canadian human rights lawyer and author of Illusions of Security: Global Surveillance and Democracy in the Post 9-11 World, a book that details the Maher Arar national security scandal.

SATURDAY JUNE 2: Golden Anniversary Gala & Liberty Awards
Coast Coal Harbour Hotel, 6-9pm

A special birthday gala for friends and supporters, this formal dinner event features remarks from Clayton Ruby, Canada’s most famous civil rights lawyer and keynote speech from John Cruickshank, publisher of the Toronto Star. The BCCLA will hand out the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award as well as the prestigious Liberty Awards in Legal Advocacy, Journalism and Youth Activism
