BCCLA concerned about rights breach in exclusion of migrant workers from MSP coverage

The BC Civil Liberties Association has sent a letter to Hon. George Abbott, Minister of Health,
expressing concern about recent revelations that indicate B.C. is the only province in Canada
denying immediate health insurance coverage to agricultural workers brought into the country
under the Federal Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program.

This exclusion represents a real threat to the health and security of workers brought into Canada
under federal sponsorship, and may represent a breach of the province’s obligations under the
Canada Health Act and the Charter of Rights.

The BCCLA is asking for a prompt meeting with the Minister to discuss these concerns.

For comment, media can contact Jason Gratl, BCCLA board president at 604-694-1919 or
