RELEASE: BCCLA reacts to the passage of Bill C-51

Micheal Vonn, Policy Director at the BC Civil Liberties Association, reacted today to the passage of Bill C-51, the so-called “anti-terrorism bill” by Canada’s Senate.

““We are deeply disappointed to see this dangerous bill pass through Canada’s Senate. Bill C-51 represents a massive threat to the freedoms of Canadians, without making us any safer. Tinkering won’t fix this law. It is deeply flawed, violates key constitutional rights, and it must simply be scrapped.

Government has a responsibility to protect public safety, but it must do so in a way that is lawful and that respects the constitution. Bill C-51 fails that test.”

The BCCLA’s submissions on this bill, to the House of Commons and to the Senate, are available here.
