BCCLA Hosting Police-Involved Deaths Talk at Vancity Theatre

Vancouver, B.C. – The BCCLA is welcoming national and international experts in policeinvolved
and in-custody deaths to Vancouver for a free public forum on in-custody deaths January 21, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Confirmed speakers for the Law Foundation sponsored forum include:
Lord Toby Harris, Chair of the Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody in
the United Kingdom Mr. Andre Marin, Ombudsman of Ontario and author of a critical report on the Special Investigations Unit in Ontario Mr. Gareth Jones, former Senior Investigator with the Ontario Special Investigations Unit Ms. Shirley Heafey, former Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints against the RCMP

“Police accountability continues to be a pressing issue for Canadians,” said Robert Holmes, President of the BCCLA. “In B.C., everyone from the Police Chiefs and Frank Paul Inquiry Commissioner William Davies to the average person on the street recognizes that police investigating themselves doesn’t work. We hope this forum facilitates positive change.” The event will take place from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and will feature a local panel and an international panel. Space is limited, and guests are encouraged to arrive early to ensure admission.
