BCCLA Launches Police News Blog

Today the BC Civil Liberties Association formally launched RightsCity.org, Canada’s first blog focused exclusively on Canadian police accountability, and the first blog of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association. “The BCCLA is thrilled to be launching Canada’s first policing blog,” says

Robert Holmes, President of the BCCLA. “We hope that by engaging and educating the community through stories we post, and also by posting articles, comments and stories by members and organizations that share our goals, we can all work together to achieve the best policing possible.”

RightsCity is a blog on current policing issues and provides opportunity for people and community organizations to comment on policing news and contribute articles. The site also offers the public a look at how the 25 police complaints the BCCLA has filed since 2004 have unfolded, and will post news on police involved death complaints filed by the BCCLA.

“RightsCity is not just about problems in policing and accountability, but also successes and positive changes achieved by communities and police agencies,” says Holmes. “There are positive examples across the country of accountability systems that are working and evolving. We want to share the good news as well.”

Founded in 1962, the B.C. Civil Liberties Association is Canada’s oldest and most active civil liberties organization. Police accountability work has been a cornerstone of the organization’s activities since its inception. “While our organization might be almost fifty years old, we’re catching the rising tide of the latest technologies to educate and be educated by our membership and the public,” said Holmes.
