Reg Whitaker

Surveillance is nothing new, but it is always changing. What’s new and what’s old news? Reg will provide the background for today’s surveillance debate by putting Canada’s surveillance state into historical context.

Reg Whitaker is the author of The End of Privacy, and a Professor at both the University of Victoria and York University.

Micheal Vonn

What privacy means for democracy by Micheal Vonn

Too often, the safety of whole countries is pitted against the individual’s right to privacy. This paradigm gets it wrong. Privacy is a collective value that underpins many other democratic values including free expression, autonomy, security and equality.

Micheal Vonn is the Policy Director for the BCCLA and one of the country’s most prominent privacy advocates.
